Coherence Quiets the Noise

Yesterday, I decided to go rollerblading in the evening with my kids up at the church parking lot that had been freshly re-surfaced. Once we got the hang of it and I could get in that flow state, that groove where you're gliding and moving in rhythm, I began to feel so much better in my body-mind. Why? Because I changed my energy. And when you change your energy, everything changes.
As we were skating, Rosie, my nine year old daughter says to me, "Mommy, sometimes I have these bad thoughts that I'll just be doing something and something bad is going to happen like a fire or somebody is going to get me and my stomach doesn't feel good."
She's been sharing a lot of thoughts like this with me lately.
I say to her, "Okay. That's called anxiety and it's an emotion. It's what you are experiencing. Would you like to experience something else instead?"
"Yes!," she says.
"So, how about if we do our Heart-Centered Breathing together and see what happens."
So, we do.
Because advice doesn't really help. She's having an experience, a feeling, and feelings are the language of the body, so it's into the body we must go if we want to have a different experience, if we want to change our energy.
If you just give information, it rarely makes it past the brain stem into the body. It just becomes another thought while the body is still feeling anxious.
After just a few slow, deep, complete breaths, breathing together, I ask her what she notices. She says she feels light. I ask her what her next thought is and she says, "Nothing bad is going to happen. Everything is okay."
I double check with her and ask her if her belly agrees. Her eyes kind of drift to one side as she senses and feels... then she smiles and says yes. I ask her what her heart says and she says she's safe.
I can feel my heart grow in appreciation for her and feel a pulse and a warmth in my body. I can literally feel our electromagnetic fields synchronized.
And that's what coherence is: When our thoughts, feelings and emotions are all in sync - are aligned, stable, coordinated to be thinking, feeling and experiencing the same thing.
"Come on mom, let's go!" And off we go to skate some more - light, free and easy.
These moments are so precious because this is life. Life is made up of a million moments, opportunities for self-awareness, reconciliation - returning to right relationship.
We have tens of thousands of thoughts every day. If I let all of my thoughts run the show on their own, I would live in the greatest drama ever.
Especially when we're going to go do something new or unknown, all of those thoughts rear up and give us a million reasons to not do it. To be fair, they're trying to keep us safe. It's up to us to recognize that and update their job for them so they can be aligned with our hearts.
Coherence helps to quiet the noise.
Coherence brings more harmony, more order, more rhythm to our body and the systems in our body so they can be most efficient - not wasting energy or using any more energy than is needed.
Coherence keeps the communication lines open between our daily ambitions and the deeper, truer sense of ourselves so we're not at odds with ourselves.
Did you know there are more autoimmune diseases in our present day than ever before?
Think of what autoimmune disease really is -- it's you, attacking you.
Might taking the time to break the habit of being at odds with yourself be worth it? Would learning the life skill of teaching you how to help you be a priority?
Simply by taking a few slow, deep breaths into your body, perhaps while placing your hand over your heart so you can feel yourself helping yourself, you will begin to initiate a state of coherence. At the very least, you will begin to stop the energy drain of runaway thinking that is robbing your body of its precious life force.
My daughter and I have been navigating her inner world a lot lately. We've played with visualizing those thoughts as tiny twigs floating down stream. Breathing slow and deep in our body keeps us from being trapped in the eddy with all that floating debris and back in the current, back in the flow of life.
Over the last 2 weeks, I've had the supreme pleasure of teaching and talking about HeartMath® to nearly 40 people.
I'm passionate about the simplicity, the science and the art of connecting with our heart's intelligence. This science class for grown-ups helps us to understand the mechanisms in place and the physiology of our body, or how it works. Like Dr. Joe Dispenza always says, when we know what is happening and why, the how gets easier.
When we understand the mechanism in place, we assign more meaning to practicing heart-brain coherence and, in doing so, we get greater results.
Like my client whose heart biologically grew younger from practicing the Quick Coherence™ technique. She could see the feedback on her Oura ring, a device created to measure health metrics, and it empowered her to see that she was causing an effect by managing her attention, her awareness, her breath.
Or how about the woman in her late seventies who took the 6 week class - her resting heart rate at the beginning of the course was in the mid 90's. As she practiced, she started seeing on her device times of dipping into the 70's. She was overcome! She was amazed at that number. Just by taking the 6 week class, learning some science and information and then practicing the coherence breathing, she joined up with her body and helped it work better for her. Think of how much more efficiently her body is working now! She continues to have a resting heart rate in the 70's today (months after the class) as her new baseline.
Or how about the dad that became more patient and calm around his daughter? Or the woman who made it through a family gathering without having to go lie down? Or the mom who lost fifteen pounds because she learned it was healthier and more efficient to move in an aligned, coherent way than to move in ways that she "should, but didn't want to."
I'll be teaching the 6 week signature HeartMath Coherence Advantage™ class every Friday at 9:00 am Mountain Time beginning October 3 through November 7th.
Every class is on Zoom so you can tune in from anywhere.
Every class is recorded and sent to you after class in case you miss one or two, so you can be caught up with the group for the next class.
I'll send you a workbook before class begins for you to print off and have ready each week because the act of writing also brings the teachings into the body.
This class is for the nine year old in all of us that never learned how to self-regulate our nervous systems, that never learned emotional intelligence, that never learned how to sense and feel in beautiful, safe, nourishing ways - we only learned where it doesn't feel good and that we want it to go away.
This is about inclusion, it's about turning the light on in the dark and transmuting the shadow-y parts of ourselves with the intelligence of our hearts.
If you're a parent navigating the incredible task of raising tiny humans, this class is for you.
If you're in a partnership navigating the dance of sharing a life with someone, this class is for you.
If you're involved in social dynamics like business, sports, teams at work, this class is also for you.
If you're a human being living on Earth School, have a beating heart and active mind swimming in a sea of thoughts and feelings while inhabiting the vehicle that is your body, then this class is definitely for you.
